Pope Francis, the Catholic Church's 266th pontiff and the first Latin American leader, passed away of a stroke and heart failure on Easter Monday, Apr. 21, 2025, at the age of 88.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, confirmed the Holy Father's death at 7:35 AM, in his residence at the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta.?
Pope Francis, who has a chronic lung condition, was admitted to the hospital on Feb. 14, 2025, due to a respiratory problem. It eventually worsened to double pneumonia, resulting in a 38-day stay at Gemelli Hospital, the longest of his papacy. His health had become a growing concern in the last few months of his life.
Born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio on Dec. 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he was a Jesuit priest who was recognized for his humility and dedication to service. Before becoming the first Jesuit and Latin American pope in 2013, he was the Archbishop of Buenos Aires. His remarkable papacy demonstrated a strong devotion to the poor, the marginalized, and the vocation of mercy.
He was also the first to use the name Francis in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, a humble saint who dedicated his life to serving the poor and marginalized, mirroring his pontificate's theological and political orientation.
During his 12-year tenure, Pope Francis prioritized compassion and inclusivity, tackling topics such as climate change, economic inequality, and interfaith dialogue.
However, his papacy also faced criticism, particularly regarding his handling of the Church’s sexual abuse crisis and his stance on traditional doctrines.?
In his final public appearance on Easter Sunday, Pope Francis, despite his fragile state, blessed the faithful from St. Peter's Basilica, embodying his enduring dedication to his people.
Global leaders and religious figures have paid respect and outpouring tributes to his efforts to modernize the Church and promote unity following his death.
The Vatican has announced that the Pope's body will be transferred to St. Peter's Basilica on Wednesday, where faithful can visit and pay their respects. A conclave to determine his successor is expected to convene within 15 to 20 days, following traditional mourning rituals.
