Tropical Depression ‘Kristine’ placed under Tropical Wind Cyclone Signal No. 1

Manila, Philippines – Tropical depression ‘Kristine’ has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility ((PAR) on Monday, 12 AM, PAGASA said.

At 4:00 AM, Kristine was estimated to be 1050 kilometers east of Southern Luzon and sustained 55 km/p near the center with gusts reaching up to 70 km/p and central pressure of 1002 hPa. Tropical depression is moving west southwestward at a speed of 30 km/p. The strong winds from the storm’s center extended outwards up to 550 km.

According to the weather bureau's 5:00 AM bulletin, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 (TCWS) affects all over Catanduanes and other portions of Visayas.


These are the areas under TCWS No. 1:

  • Catanduanes;
  • the northeastern portion of Northern Samar (Laoang, Palapag, Mapanas, Gamay, Catubig, Lapinig); and
  • the northeastern portion of Eastern Samar (Jipapad, Arteche, San Policarpo, Oras).

Winds
According to the Philippines Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the highest possible TCWS of Tropical Depression Kristine may rise  would be TCWS No. 4.

Gale-force gusts may experience in the following areas on:
Monday, particularly to those who are in coastal areas and upland regions that are exposed to strong winds which are the southern portion of Palawan, Siquijor, Bohol, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Norte, BARMM, Sarangani, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental.

Tuesday, will also affect on: Palawan, Romblon, Aklan, Antique, Negros Island Region, Bohol, Zamboanga del Norte, Northern Mindanao, Southern Leyte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Norte, Sarangani, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental.

Wednesday, Mimaropa, Visayas and Mindanao will also experience this.

Rainfall
On Tuesday, Cantanduanes, Camarines Sur and Camarines Norte expected to have heavy to intense rainfall from 100-200 mm. While in Eastern Visayas, Quezon and the rest of the Bicol Region will experience moderate to heavy rains, PAGASA said.

On Wednesday, heavy to intense rains are expected in Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, and Quezon. Moderate to heavy rainfall is forecasted for Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, and the rest of Cagayan Valley.

Flooding and rain-induced landslides may happen, especially on areas that are prone to these hazards and in regions due to prior rainfall.

Track, Intensity, Rainfall
On Monday until Tuesday morning, Kristine’s track shows that it will be move westward and then it will turn west northwestward to northwestward Tuesday afternoon until the end of the forecast period. 

On Friday afternoon, it is expected that Kristine will make landfall all over Northern Luzon.

Since this tropical cyclone is still over the Philippine Sea, further intensification is likely, given the favorable environmental conditions (high SST and low wind shear) for development over the area. Changes in forecast track is also not ruled out, depending on the movement of the weather systems over the mid-latitude over the next days," PAGASA said.
Meanwhile, some affected areas due to bad weather experienced a class suspension on Monday.

On Monday, due to the bad effects of the Tropical Depression Kristine, some area already suspended a class for Tuesday, October 22 and Wednesday, October 23.

  • Albay
  •  Sto. Domingo - all levels, public and private schools
  • Negros Occidental
  • Sorsogon
  • Talisay City - Preschool to Senior High School
  • Bulan - all levels, public and private schools
  • Bulusan - all levels, public and private schools, effective October 22-23
  • Castilla - kinder to grade 12
  • Donsol - all levels, public and private schools
  • Juban - all levels, public and private schools
  • Magallanes - all levels, public and private schools
  • Pilar - all levels, public and private schools
  • Sorsogon City - all levels, public and private schools
  • Sta. Magdalena - all levels, public and private schools, effective Oct. 22-23

Class Suspension in Letran-Manila

As of today, 11:30 am, PAG-ASA has raised Typhoon Kristine as Signal No. 1 in Metro Manila. 

Manila suspends afternoon classes from Kindergarten to Senior High School in accordance with DepEd Order No. 37, s. 2022, due to inclement weather. 

Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Manila’s page announces suspension of classes from Kindergarten to Senior High School by 1 pm.

The weather bureau advised the public and disaster risk and management offices to take appropriate measures.
