The 100th season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) commenced with a historic opening ceremony at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay City, Sept. 7.

True to this season’s theme “Siglo Uno: Inspiring Legacies”, the event highlighted NCAA’s century-old history and tradition as member-schools were introduced according to the year they first joined the Philippines’ “Grand Old League”, beginning with the pioneer San Beda University and concluding with this year’s host Lyceum of the Philippines University, joining in 2011. Letran being the third school to enter the league in 1928.

Notable athletes from the 10 member-schools were awarded with recognition in their respective institution’s colors. Representing Letran is RJ Jazul from the Season 81 champion Knights, with a renowned reputation as an excellent shooter in the professional basketball setting.

Following his glory days in Letran, he has then accomplished a PBA title in 2013 and was awarded as Mr. Quality Minutes in PBA season 2020.

The ceremony also featured stellar performances from Arman Ferrer and SB19 member Justin De Dios. P-pop group G22 performed this season’s theme song “Own the Future.”

The season’s inaugural game witnessed the San Beda Red Lions obtaining the win against the LPU Pirates, 79-63, while the Benilde Blazers clinched their Game 2 victory against the Mapua Cardinals, 78-65.

In Pursuit of Championship Glory

In an exclusive interview with The LANCE, Paolo Javillonar, team co-captain of the 18-strong Letran Knights, hopes for redemption and victory this NCAA 100, after the Knights’ lackluster campaign and early exit last season.

Dito ulit tayo para bumangon. It’s a new beginning, one game at a time and focus [lang],” Javillonar remarked.

Aiming to restore their championship glory, the Letran Knights have enlisted new talent including Jovel Baliling, Jimboy Estrada, and CJ Delfino under the guidance of coach Allen Ricardo.

Team co-captain Kobe Monje also expressed his determination to make a strong comeback for the team.

Babawi talaga kami ngayon. Ibang iba kami ngayon. Kumbaga, gutom talaga kami sa panalo [dahil] sa nangyari last season,” Monje shared.

The Letran Knights are set to play against the San Sebastian Stags on Sept. 8, in Filoil EcoOil Centre, San Juan City.
