The Letran Knights tightened their grip on the third spot as they toppled the Jose Rizal
University Heavy Bombers, 89-79, on Friday, at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Koy Galvelo dropped bombs from beyond the arc. The Knights poured in 35 points in the
second quarter and blew the game wide-open.
Letran led by as much as 22 points in the third quarter before JRU decided to put in some
fight. However, the Heavy Bombers were too late, as Bong Quinto and JP Calvo rallied their
troops to victory.
With the win, the Knights strengthened their hold of the third seed with a 10-4 record –
dropping the cellar-dwelling Heavy Bombers to a 2-13 card.
“Good win for us. Although medyo nag-relax kami nung fourth quarter, buti naibalik namin
yung intensity,” said Letran head coach Jeff Napa.
Galvelo fired 16 points and converted four triples in the game. Meanwhile, Letran’s
dynamic duo Bong Quinto and JP Calvo both redeemed their selves from subpar
performances last game.
Quinto flirted with another triple-double, posting 14 points, 12 assists, and four rebounds
while Calvo was back to his usual self and contributed 13 points, six assists, and five
boards.
Jed Mendoza’s career-high 25 points went down the drain as the Heavy Bombers
succumbed their thirteenth loss of the season.
Letran will face the top-seeded Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates on October 5,
Friday.
