Pagtanggal sa Mother Tongue Bilang Asignatura, Pinag-aaralan ng DepEd

Isang guro sa pampublikong paralaan na nagtuturo ng wikang Tagalog sa kanyang klase. Ang korteseya sa larawan na ito ay nagmumula sa Rappler.

Isinusulong ng Departamento ng Edukasyon (DepEd) ang mas pinaagang pagpapanday sa mga mag-aaral na nasa ilalim ng “basic education curriculum” sa wikang Ingles at pagtatanggal ng Mother Tongue bilang asignatura sa elementarya.

Ayon sa “revised basic education curriculum” na inilabas ng DepEd kamakailan, ang Ingles bilang asignatura ay mas maaga nang ituturo sa mga mag-aaral na nasa unang baitang. Ang dating asignatura na itinuturo sa ikatlong markahan ng akademikong taon ay ililipat sa mas pinaagang unang markahan. 

Nakasaad din sa bagong curriculum ang pagtatanggal sa Mother Tongue bilang isang asignatura upang ilaan sa mas mahabang oras na pagsasanay sa wikang Ingles at Filipino.

Ang mga pagbabagong ito ay kabalintunaan sa mandato ng Republic Act No. 10533 o Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2012 na nagbunga ng K-12 Program. Ayon sa mandato ng batas, nararapat na pandayin ang mga mag-aaral na nasa unang tatlong taon ng elementarya gamit ang Mother Tongue bilang “mode of instruction”.

Ayon sa grupong Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT), nilulusaw ng mga pagbabagong nais ng DepEd ang nasyonalismo ng kasalukuyang henerasyon.

Nasa ilalim pa rin ng pag-aaral ang “revised basic education curriculum” na ikinakasa ng DepEd. Umaasa ang departamento na magsisilbing solusyon ng mga pagbabagong ikinakasa sa patuloy na bumababang “literacy rate” sa bansa.
