The Colegio solemnly observed Ash Wednesday on Mar. 5, marking the beginning of the Lenten season—a period of penance, prayer, and charity. Faculty members, students, and staff gathered at the Student Center Auditorium for a Holy Mass and the traditional imposition of ashes, symbolizing repentance and the transient nature of life.

In his homily, the Vice-President for Administrative Affairs and Prior of the Convent of St. John Lateran, Rev. Fr. Jose Martin Sibug O.P. reflected on the significance of the Lenten journey, emphasizing that "the key of happiness is the love of God." He encouraged the faithful to use this time to deepen their faith through self-reflection and acts of kindness.

A central theme of the celebration was charity. The message that "almsgiving is not about giving, it is charity" resonated deeply with the congregation.

True generosity, as the priest explained, is not merely an obligation but a way of living out one's faith. Pope Francis' words, "Without the poor, the Gospel is meaningless," reminded attendees of the importance of serving the less fortunate, a principle that aligns with Letran’s mission of compassion and social responsibility.

The imposition of ashes, a defining moment of the observance, served as a powerful reminder of human mortality. "Ang abo ay nagsisimbulo ng pagiging mortalize—tayo ay may hangganan," meaning "the ashes symbolize our mortality—we have limits."

This act urged the Letran community to reflect on the impermanence of life and the importance of living with purpose and faith.

As the Lenten season unfolds, the Colegio calls on its community to embody the essence of Lent—not just through prayer and fasting, but by actively spreading love and kindness.
