Pope Leo XIV assigns Cardinal Antonio Tagle as the new titular bishop of the Suburbicarian Diocese of Albano in Italy, which the pontiff previously held before his Papal ascent.

Although it may be perceived as a promotion or a higher appointment, the role is primarily honorary and ceremonial. It does not involve administrative authority but serves to acknowledge Cardinal Tagle’s contributions to the Church.

The Diocese of Albano, situated near Rome, is one of the seven suburbicarian sees traditionally linked to cardinal-bishops, who hold the highest rank within the College of Cardinals.

In this context, the cardinal-bishop holds a titular title and does not reside in or oversee the daily operations of the diocese, which are managed by the diocesan bishop.

The Diocese of Albano is currently under the leadership of Bishop Vincenzo Viva, who holds full jurisdiction and administrative authority over the territory in his capacity as diocesan bishop.

In contrast, Cardinal Tagle does not exercise any governance over the diocese, as his primary responsibility lies within the Vatican. He presently serves as the proprefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, with specific oversight of the section dedicated to New Evangelization and the newly established particular Churches.

Additionally, Tagle is part of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See, and the Council of the Section for Relations with States and International Organizations of the Secretariat of State. Even without the new title, his position in the highest-ranking position in the Vatican is already secured.

His new titular assignment does not signify a change in his responsibilities but rather honors his ongoing service and dedication to the Church's mission.

“The assignment of the title of the Suburbicarian Diocese of Albano to a cardinal-bishop is a very ancient tradition. It signifies a close bond between the Pope, Bishop of Rome, and the titular cardinals,” the Diocese of Albano said in a statement.

According to Bishop Viva, he has already spoken with Cardinal Tagle to extend the diocese’s congratulations and offer their prayers.

“The choice to now entrust this title to Cardinal Tagle is a gesture of love and prompt concern for our Diocese of Albano,” he shared.

Cardinal Tagle, now 67 years old, was elevated to the rank of cardinal-bishop on April 14, 2020, after having served since 2012 as the cardinal priest of San Felice da Cantalice in Centocelle, before being assigned the title of the Suburbicarian Church of Albano.
