Pope Francis continues to be in a critical state, and his condition remains precarious, according to an update from the Holy See Press Office on Saturday evening. The Vatican’s statement emphasized that the pontiff “is not out of danger” and that his medical team is closely monitoring his health.

The 88-year-old leader of the Catholic Church experienced a severe and prolonged respiratory crisis resembling asthma early Saturday morning. This episode necessitated the administration of high-flow oxygen therapy to assist his breathing. Further medical examinations, including blood tests, revealed that the pope is suffering from thrombocytopenia, a condition marked by an abnormally low platelet count, which has been linked to his anemia. Due to these complications, doctors determined that he required blood transfusions to stabilize his condition.

Despite his ongoing health challenges, Pope Francis has remained conscious and alert. He spent much of the day seated in an armchair, though the Vatican’s statement noted that he appeared “more uncomfortable than yesterday.” Given the seriousness of his condition, medical experts have provided a cautious prognosis, emphasizing that his recovery remains uncertain.

In light of these health concerns, the Vatican confirmed earlier in the day that Pope Francis will not be able to lead the traditional Sunday Angelus prayer scheduled for February 23. His absence from this significant public event underscores the gravity of his medical situation. On Friday, a press conference was held at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where the pope is currently receiving treatment. During the briefing, his medical team classified his condition as serious, acknowledging that while the pope is fully aware of his situation, his overall health remains fragile.

The Holy See has called upon Catholics and people of goodwill around the world to join in prayer for the pontiff’s recovery. The news of his deteriorating condition has prompted an outpouring of support from religious leaders, political figures, and faithful followers globally. As the world watches and waits, further updates on his health status are expected to be released in the coming days.
