With about four million devotees present, the annual Sinulog festival was nothing short of incredible as Filipinos from various regions flock to Cebu City for the celebration last Jan. 19.

The vibrant celebration, which takes place every year on the third Sunday of January, commemorates the Santo Niño and marks the introduction of Christianity to the Philippines, particularly in Cebu.

The Philippines, being a predominantly a Catholic country, ensured that the Sinulog Festival continues to thrive centuries later, attracting countless devotees from across the nation to honor the roots of Christianity in the region.

The festivities began with a mass at 8:00 AM at the Cebu City Sports Center, setting the tone for the day's events, followed by a street dancing competition and other activities, featuring over a hundred participants.

One of the festival’s main highlights was the grand parade and ritual showdown, which began at noon, transforming the streets into a lively spectacle filled with festival goers, colorful floats, and vendors.

Negros Oriental emerged victorious in the free interpretation category of the ritual showdown, while Carcar City claimed the top spot in the Sinulog-based category.

To ensure order, a liquor ban was imposed during the parade and was lifted at 10 PM, contributing to the smooth and harmonious conduct of the event.

Despite the large number of attendees, the celebrations proceeded peacefully, with only minor issues related to crowd and traffic management.
