The Letran Lady Knights were pummeled by the defending champion, College of Saint Benilde Lady Blazers, 21-25, 15-25, 14-25, in game one of the NCAA Season 99 Women's Volleyball Finals at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan earlier today.

Letran's offense was led by Gia Maquilang, who poured in 10 points built on nine spikes, along with Judiel Nitura that chipped in nine, whilst Lara Mae Silva contributed 20 digs.

Coach Oliver Almadro’s squad offered a stiff challenge to the Lady Blazers in the opening calvo through a long rally of attacks and defenses, knotting the score at six apiece.

With the Lady Knights building a cushion, the back-to-back women's volleyball title-holders matched their aggressiveness, which forced Letran to commit attack errors and surrender the opening frame, 21-25.

After failing to secure the first frame, the Muralla-based squad reeled and failed to regain the tempo that allowed them to keep up with their adversaries as they fell in the following sets in convincing fashion.

Gayle Pascual and Michelle Gamit cashed in 14 each, backed by Zamantha Nolasco with 12 markers as the Lady Blazers are one win away from clinching the title.

Even through an overwhelming defeat, the Letran Lady Knights will have a shot to even the series this coming Sunday, May 26, 2024.
