Knights unable to withstand Pirates' late-game surge

After losing in overtime last Friday against arch-rival San Beda Red Lions, the Letran Knights suffered another heart-break, this time to the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates, 87-82, in their seventh game of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 92 at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

The Knights were in command in the fourth quarter after back-to-back triples from JP Calvo, 74-65. Bonbon Batiller followed a jumper to extend the lead to 11, 76-65.

Lyceum however, had other things in mind, as they ended the game with a 22-5 run led by MJ Ayaay and CJ Perez, holding the Knights to only one field goal in the last five minutes of the game.

Ayaay led the Pirates with 20 points and four rebounds. Mike Nzeusseu scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for LPU while reigning NCAA MVP Perez fired 16 points.

Meanwhile, the Knights were led by JP Calvo with 18 points and four rebounds. Calvo scored nine points in Letran's 18-point fourth quarter.

Bong Quinto posted 13 points and 10 boards while Christian Fajarito added 12 and 12 for the Knights.

The Knights are now 5-3 and will look to end their slump on Tuesday, 2:00 p.m. against the Emilio Aguinaldo Generals in the same venue.
